Does Final Cut Pro X have to be 'left running' when being processed using Send to Compressor?
I, possibly stupidly, set Compressor running on a project and shut down FCPX. During that process no activity progressed and now Compressor seems to be stuck.

No.
Once the job is sent successfully to Compressor FCP X can be closed.
Ran a test to double check this:
If unsure where the output file went click the FIND magnifier.

Good question! I've often wondered about this. So I did a Send To Compressor from FCPX. Once Compressor opened, applied a preset. Then quit FCPX. Compressor submitted the Batch and encoded the FCPX project just fine.

My Compressor (current version) seems to be 'stuck'. I send jobs to it but all it says is Processing with no further activity. Left it for 4 hours and nothing happened. Elapsed Time stays at zero.
Is there a cache file someplace?
Suggest opening Compressor Preferences > Advanced > Reset Queue.
